Slab Design Union were commissioned to provide pre-construction technical design services and construction phase site co-ordination for a single storey rear extension and refurbishment project in Edgbaston, Birmingham.

The scheme included the demolition of the existing rear ground floor wall and the construction of a new extension that created a single living, kitchen and dining space with improved links to the garden. A steel ‘goalpost’ frame was concealed within the existing structure that included capacity for future expansion into the roof space. Existing services were relocated to allow the floor plan to be opened for the full width of the property

A simple palette of brickwork and tiling to match the existing, along with large format bi-fold doors and rooflights allowed generous amounts of natural light into the deep plan. A raking soffit was utilised to draw light down the deep bulkhead and avoid high-level shadowing.

New flooring, new finishes and a new fitted kitchen completed the project, which included a central island, integrated appliances and views across the space to the living area and out to the garden. The project also incorporated fabric upgrades that improved thermal comfort and reduced overall running costs.
