Slab Design Union were commissioned to extend and refurbish a Grade 2 listed property located within the Calthorpe Estate in Birmingham.
Working closely with the client and a specialist heritage consultancy, we developed a single-storey brick, metal and glass pavilion linked to the existing ground floor, with a roof incorporating solar panels and an adjacent glazed canopy over a new terrace accessing the garden that drew inspiration from Victorian glasshouses and orangeries.
The canopy’s asymmetric geometry responded to the existing rear elevation and neighbouring properties, supported by slender columns and portal frames that established a dialogue without competing for prominence which maximised transparency and light penetration, facilitating year-round outdoor living.
The pavilion elevations employ a modular grid with generous door heights that slide open to link to the terrace, and clerestory windows above as a contemporary interpretation of Victorian proportions. Low brick walls transition into a masonry parapet and railings, creating visual continuity between terrace and garden while maintaining sightlines from both ground and first floors.
The ground floor internal refurbishment includes a new combined kitchen, dining and living area at lower level with a laundry, boot room and refurbished rear lounge that preserve the hierarchical arrangement between communal and private spaces characteristic of grander Victorian homes.
The design preserves established views, respects neighbouring amenity, and remains concealed from street view. The material palette of brick, metal and glass creates harmony between old and new, supporting the property’s continued use as a contemporary family home while ensuring longevity for future generations.
